In 2009, Social Media Emerged as a Game Changer

The holidays are over and it’s back to business as usual. 2010 holds unlimited potential and gives us great reasons to be hopeful as we look to the future. But before we can plan for the future, we have to review the past. So let’s take a trip through some of the marketing trends of 2009.

The 2009 Iranian presidential election was controversial; many (including all of the opposition candidates) believed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won the election due to manipulation and rigging. Protests erupted and police and the military immediately suppressed even peaceful protests with force, resulting in the deaths of between 36 to 72 people. Universities were closed, websites banned, and cell phones blocked. Protesters turned to Twitter, sending news and pictures, and organizing protests. Soon the world was following the revolution on Twitter. The U.S. State Department even urged Twitter to delay a planned network upgrade that would have temporarily put the service offline. The company agreed “because events in Iran were tied directly to the growing significance of Twitter as an important communication and information network.” Due to the protests and worldwide attention, a recount was held, certifying Ahmadinejad as the President. The use of social media has prompted many to declare that the internet has forever changed foreign policy and the transparency of democracy.

Here in America the recession changed the way people interacted with each other. Job loss, the housing marketing collapse and pay cuts lead people to turn to each other for strength and encouragement. People shared advice, experiences, and tips with each other through the internet. They rallied together in places like Facebook to share budget-friendly recommendations and LinkedIn to help their friends find jobs. According to Nielsen Media Research 70% of consumers trust opinions posted online, including those of strangers. Marketers and brands use this knowledge and being using social media for marketing more than ever before.  Moving into 2010, expect to see even more businesses using social media as this trend continues to grow.
